OBITUARY: Gary Edmund Deremer, 1944-2023

Gary Edmund Deremer sadly passed away at the age of 79 on December 7, 2023. He was a resident of Crescent City. Gary was born January 13, 1944 to Edmund and Daisy Deremerof Cottage Grove, Oregon. Gary grew up in Eugene, Oregon.

Surviving children are Amity Chairez of Nampa, Idaho and Nickolas Deremer of Eureka. Gary’s wife of 36 years, Nancy, preceded him in passing.

Gary at a young age joined the Navy. Upon leaving the military he became a laborer in the union, which brought him to Southern California. This was where he met the love of his life, Nancy. Gary was a loving and devoted husband and father. He once quoted about discipline, “the hand is for loving, not hitting”. He and Nancy found their way back up the coast to Hiouchi California and there they made lifelong friends. Gary began traveling a lot for his work, and to continue his career, he had to relocate to Eureka. He and Nancy raised their family and lived in Humboldt county for over 25 years. Gary was a person of habit . He was up by 4:30 a.m. daily and would drink coffee and read the Times-Standard from the beginning to the end before he started his workday. Gary was a wealth of information. He had an amazing ability to retain everything he read and had a vast knowledge of trivia. He could tell you the world’s population, or how many people lived in India, which in turn made him a great conversationalist.

Gary was a generous man, dining out, he always called his waitress sweetheart or darling, and gave more than ample tips. He was also a sentimental man. Upon Nancy passing, every birthday, anniversary, and Valentine’s Day, he would purchase flowers and place them in a vase beside her picture. He loved flowers and going to visit, one could see an array of colors from the gladiolas that he had planted along the sidewalk, and you could smell the jasmine that he planted on the fence line.

Gary was also an avid golfer, he loved the game. His love for golfing enticed many friends to try their hand and afterwards many jokes were made about the ‘‘19th” hole. His knowledge and expertise of golf enthused a younger generation to give it a try.

Gary was also an artist in his own time. He made beautiful stained glass art and those lucky enough to be on the receiving end have inherited a part of his legacy.

Gary was a good man, he was kind hearted, and had a sense of calmness about him, he never got too excited over any dilemmas of life. He was a ‘’cool” person, and to know him was to love him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Funeral arrangements made by Blair’s Crematorium of Redding.

There will be a celebration of life on January 13, 2024 at the Del Norte County fairgrounds in the floral building at 1 p.m., refreshments provided – BYOB.
