'Season of Giving' Opportunities Abound in Del Norte County, Brookings-Harbor


Residents on both sides of the state line have multiple chances to make the holidays brighter for those in need.

On the Del Norte side, there’s Santa’s Workshop — the annual gift-giving program Rural Human Services hosts — and Toys For Tots.
In Brookings, several organizations are gathering items that’ll make things a bit easier for families and individuals.

On Friday, Potter Real Estate with Rural Human Services to hold a toy drive Friday as part Santa’s Workshop. The event will be at 6:30 p.m. at Enoteca, 960 Third Street and attendees are encouraged to bring one unwrapped toy per person.

Santa’s Workshop giving trees are also up at Walmart, Hiouchi Cafe, Tri Counties Bank, Sun Seekers Crescent City, Ca. and the pickleball courts at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.

For those who can’t make it to Potter Real Estate’s toy drive at Enoteca, they’re encouraged to take unwrapped toys to the RHS building at 286 M Street in Crescent City by Friday.

Toys and gifts will be distributed Dec. 16 and 17, according to a post from KCRE.

One-hundred kids have signed up for Shop With A Hero, a local event hosted by the California Highway Patrol on Saturday at Walmart that pairs youngsters up with a first responder to help them shop for presents for their family, according to Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin.

Meanwhile, Addie Meedom House Assisted Living & Memory Care Community, 1445 Parkway Drive in Crescent City, is hosting Toys For Tots and will hold a toy drive and Christmas party from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday.

Attendees are urged to bring an unwrapped toy and take a picture with Santa. The North Coast Youth Choir will provide music and there will be treats.

Over in Brookings, St. Timothy Episcopal Church is gathering items for Christmas stockings and gifts. These items include deodorant, shampoo, razors, body wash, toothbrushes and tooth paste, combs and brushes, Band-aids, fingernail clippers, feminine hygiene products, shoe laces, wrapped candy, body wipes, flashlights with batteries as well as small first aid and sewing kits.

New jeans, sweatshirts, jackets, sleeping bags, hiking boots, rain gear, warm socks, underwear, sweats, waterproofing spray, waterproof tents and backpacks will be wrapped and given as Christmas gifts.

These items should be dropped off at the church, 401 Fir Street in Brookings, between 9 a.m.-noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday by Dec. 15 for Christmas stockings and gifts. However, they’re welcome year-round, according to an email from Sister Cora Rose.

Brookings CORE Response is looking to fill their closet and are in need of men’s clothing, comfortable shoes — no dress shoes — hygiene products, snacks and cup noodles and pet food. Those items can be dropped off Monday through Thursday at 97900 Shopping Center Ave. #31 in Harbor, Oregon.

Brookings-Harbor Community Helpers are looking for baby wipes, bars of soap, deodorant, personal wipes, hand warmers, diapers sizes 6 and 7, Pull-ups sizes 4 and 5 and blankets. Those items can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at 539 Hemlock Street in Brookings.
