Jail Inmate Dead of Apparent Suicide


The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent suicide that occurred at the jail on Wednesday.

Correctional officers found Jason Vincent Proctor, 33, unresponsive at about 11:35 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office. Officers and emergency personnel initiated live-saving efforts but were unable to revive Proctor. He was pronounced dead at Sutter Coast Hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating Proctor’s death as an apparent suicide. Preliminary autopsy findings on Friday determined that Proctor died of ligature asphyxiation. Toxicology findings are still outstanding.

The Del Norte County District Attorney’s Office is also conducting an independent investigation.

According to the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office Online Information System, Proctor was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of carrying a dirk or dagger.

At about 11:35 pm on July 31, 2019, Correctional Officers at the Del Norte County Jail found an inmate, Jason Vincent Proctor (age 33) unresponsive in his cell. Life saving efforts were initiated by correctional staff and continued by responding emergency personnel. Proctor was not able to be revived and was later pronounced deceased at Sutter Coast Hospital. His next of kin was notified of his passing.

Proctor's death is being investigated as an apparent suicide. On August 2nd, 2019 preliminary autopsy findings indicate death from ligature asphyxiation. The final determination is pending toxicology results.

The Del Norte County District Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation.

The Del Norte County Sheriffs Office is saddened by the loss of life and extends their condolences to Mr. Proctor's family and anyone impacted by his death.
